The students’ body strongly opposed Narendra Modi’s statement on the land swap deal with Bangladesh, and called upon the government not to go ahead with the same. It said that the land swap deal would never be acceptable for the people of Assam.

AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya said, “People of the country, including people of Assam, wanted a change in governance in New Delhi and it became a reality through Narendra Modi’s leadership. But unfortunately, instead of deporting illegal nationals staying in Assam to their countries of origin, implementing the Assam Accord in its true spirit and sealing the porous India–Bangladesh border, Modi is toeing the same line as followed by the previous UPA government on the land swap issue,” adding, “The promises made by Narendra Modi during the Lok Sabha election campaign seem to be hollow.”

The then prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi betrayed the people of Assam by signing the land swap deal without taking the consent of the people of the State, the AASU said.
