Itanagar, February 20: The local dailies hit the newsstands from Wednesday following a threadbare discussion on the security of media houses and media-persons between the media fraternity and Chief Minister Nabam Tuki at his bungalow here this evening.

The media persons, both print and electronic, representing Arunachal Press Club and Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists, chronologically briefed their perpetual grievances concerning their security, particularly relating to present imbroglio that forced the shutdown of media-houses.


After a patient hearing, the CM highlighted the steps taken by him including deployment of police personnel and installation of CCTV cameras in all media houses for effective security. He also on-the-spot directed the Capital Complex SP to provide 24X7 security to all media establishments in the state capital including patrolling.


Pointing out that the contributions of state media to nation and state building is laudable, the CM reiterated his government's continued support to uphold the freedom of the Press.

Responding to a demand that all press establishments should be notified as prohibited areas after 5 pm and any trespassing would be treated illegal, the CM directed Capital Complex DC-cum-DM to issue an order to that effect forthwith.


To another demand for enactment of a law as a special protection to state media persons to serve as a deterrent against frequent violence and intimidation concerning media houses and media persons, the CM assured to form a committee for the needful and directed IPR secretary Dani Sulu, present in the meeting, to take immediate action.


Earlier, Sulu also briefed the CM about the grievances of the media and urged the media persons to reciprocate the gesture of the government.


The APC and APUWJ deeply regretted for the inconvenience caused to the valued readers since the shut down from February 14 last.
