Imphal, April 11: Manipur Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker MK Preshaw Shimray came under an armed attack near Leingangching, Litan police station of Ukhru Wednesday afternoon. A cavalcade of Deputy Speaker MK Preshaw Shimray was returning to Imphal after casting his vote from his native village Poi, under Chingai sub-division of Ukhrul, when the incident occurred at 3.10 p.m. near Leingangching under Litan police station.

According to a reliable source, an IED bomb was suspected to be planted on the road and triggered as the deputy speaker’s convoy passed by. His official car’s windshields were said to be broken on the impact of the blast, while another escort vehicle have suffered damages on its rear. Deputy Commissioner Modak Hrisheekesh Arvind had also confirmed the attack on Deputy Speaker.

The Chingai AC legislator was said to be safe and had reached Imphal at around 4pm. He was following the cavalcade of Parliamentary Secretary Victor Keishing and former chief minister Dr. Rishang Keishing, who were also returning from Bungpa Khunao village under Kamjong sub-division. An intelligence report informed that the attack could be handiwork of an armed Naga group.

A report culled from locals stated that minutes after the Keishings have just passed by the blast and several rounds of firing followed. It may be recalled that the attack this time is the second on MK Preshaw with the first on the outskirts of Ukhrul last year on April 30. Interestingly, a rumour was also doing the round in Ukhrul town on Tuesday night that Deputy Speaker MK Preshaw Shimray was been held by some group at Litan when he was on his way to Poi village on Tuesday.
