Northeasterns in Delhi Want Security

New Delhi, April 11 : Security of women and action against all forms of racial discrimination are the two major demands that 1 lakh odd northeastern voters in Delhi have tabled before the two national parties– Congress and BJP. As the national capital goes to polls on Thursday, the northeastern voters will exercise their franchise with this hope that whichever party forms the government, discrimination against the northeastern people should stop.

Interestingly, there are about 10,000 northeastern voters who will cast their votes for the first time. “We don’t want anything else except total security in the national capital,” said Along, a girl from Arunachal Pradesh, who stays with her relatives in Delhi.

While the BJP manifesto said there will be zero tolerance on racist attacks in the national capital, the Congress poll manifesto has assured of taking systematic steps to address issues relating to discrimination against students from the northeastern States. “Our party always gives maximum importance to the people of northeast living in Delhi,” said Manas Deka, a BJP coordinator in Delhi.

“If both the parties (BJP and Congress) are really serious about taking action against all forms of discrimination, they can do it whether they are in Opposition or a ruling party,” said Dipak Sarma, a resident of Dwarka.

Sarma, who hails from Guwahati, has been staying in Delhi along with his family for the last five years. As many as 1,27,11,371 electors will decide the fate of 150 candidates of different political parties for the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi. Although the main contest will be between the Congress and the BJP, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BSP have also fielded seven candidates this time.
