Assamese in US celebrate Rongali Bihu

Texas, (US), April 17: The Assamese community of Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin celebrated Rongali Bihu on April 12 with a daylong programme in the city of Houston, a press release stated. The programme saw outdoor sports, ethnic food and snacks during the day, culminating in a colourful cultural function in the evening. About 150 people gathered for the occasion.

The day started as scheduled with the hoisting of the flag and rendering of the song Sreemoyi Asomir... This was followed by fun-filled games for children and adults. There were also servings of traditional snacks such as doi chira with gur, various kinds of pitha, laru, etc. The ‘Baby Bezbaruah Memorial Running Trophy’ in the fond memory of Baby Bezbaruah, mother of Alpana B Sarangapani was awarded to the maker of the best pitha.

The morning programme was attended by many visiting parents of the Texas Assamese residents, whose presence and encouragement added grace and elegance to the celebration. A number of individuals were also recognised for their years of services to the Assamese community, while young Assamese college and school students received awards for their excellence in academics.

The Texas Bihu evening was a four-hour-long cultural treat consisting of programmes such as husori, chorus, ladies group dance, children’s group dance and medley, skit, individual songs and a special dance based on the Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s evergreen song Bristrino parore as a tribute to the Sudhakantha.

Participation and concerted effort from all residents were evident in the variety and quality of the programmes presented. The performance of young ones was delightful to watch. The husori did full justice to the sanctity and fanfare of the tradition. The dhol and the taal kept the rhythm as the energetic menfolk danced and sang to make it a grand performance. The ladies also presented a spectacular Bihu dance with japis in their hand. The celebrations continued well past midnight with one and all dancing to the tunes of colourful Bihu songs, the release added.
