Guwahati, February 13: The Bharatiya Janata Party, which had put up a good show in the Lok Sabha polls in the State, today won 340 wards and 38 municipalities (municipal boards and town committees) in the municipal polls.
Results were awaited from 44 wards and two municipalities till the filing of this report.

The Congress came a distant second with 232 wards, followed by the AGP with 39 and the AIUDF with 8. Independent candidates accounted for 77 wards. While the NCP captured four, CPM and BPF got one each.

Municipality-wise, the Congress won 17, followed by the AGP with 2 and the NCP with 1. There was no majority in ten municipalities, while four ended in ties.

Elections were held for 746 wards and 74 municipalities (32 municipal boards and 42 town committees).

The results – touted as the semifinals ahead of the Assembly polls next year – could mean a serious setback for the Congress, which has seen its electoral fortunes in the civic polls dwindle drastically. The Congress had won 424 wards out of 696 where polls were held, while the AGP and the BJP had won 102 and 66 respectively. The Congress had almost made a clean sweep of the municipalities by capturing 71 of the 74 municipalities.

The saffron party today forged ahead in most of the major towns in the state like Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Tezpur, Silchar, Nagaon and Dhubri among others.

Dibrugarh: The BJP swept the civic bodies – Dibrugarh Municipal Board, Chabua Town Committee, Naharkatia Town Committee and Namrup Town Committee polls in the district for the first time.

The BJP won 16 of the 22 wards in the municipality here while five were retained by the Congress and one went to an Independent candidate. In Naharkatia Town Committee and Chabua Town Committee elections, the Congress saw a total rout as they failed to retain any seat. All the four seats that went to polls for the Naharkatia Town Committee, went to the BJP. In the four seats of the Chabua Town Committee elections, BJP won three, while one went to an Independent candidate. In the Namrup Town Committee polls, which went to the civic body elections for the first time, the BJP emerged victorious with five seats of the total eight, while the Congress managed to win three seats.

Jorhat: The BJP today scored a remarkable victory in the Jorhat Municipal Board elections by winning as many as 12 of the 19 seats of ward commissioners, leaving the Congress with seven and completely decimating the AGP, which drew a blank. While the Congress was on course to form town committees in Titabor and Teok, the NCP has bagged the Mariani civic body.

Silchar: It was a comprehensive win for the BJP in the Silchar Municipal Board election as it secured 15 wards out of the 28 wards and is on course to form the Board, ending the 12-year Congress regime. Till this report was filed, counting for wards 23, 24 and 15 were in progress.

The Congress managed to bag eight wards, while two wards went to Independent candidates.
