Meghalaya: State Cabinet approves implementation of prepaid metering system

Shilong, feb 5: The State Cabinet on Wednesday approved the implementation of the prepaid metering system for energy consumers in the state. Speaking to media persons after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said that the Government has given financial support to Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited to encourage consumers to install prepaid meters.

Stating that special funds have been allocated for the programme, Sangma said that the programme would ensure that the realisation of revenue is done on concurrent basis and this will ensure that consumers are not subjected to arrears.

He also stated that the MPDCL has proposed that the Government should also notify all the departments to resort to prepaid metering system for all energy consumptions in offices, headquarters, buildings and autonomous bodies.

The State Government has also advised the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) to have a aggressive workshops to encourage consumers to adopt franchise model for realisation of payment of all the energy consumed by the consumers.

Chief Minister also said that some consumers in different parts of the state has used the franchise mode and it indicates that the model would work successfully.
